Houston Rep. Shawn Thierry, who recently made news for joining an anti-transgender policy group, dispensed with all pretenses of being a Democrat on Friday and announced that she’s switching to the GOP.

In a post on X, Thierry wrote: “The Democratic Party has veered so far left, so deep into the progressive abyss, that it now champions policies that I cannot, in good conscience, support policies like promoting sex changes for children during a vulnerable stage of their lives, and dismantling Title IX protections for women in sports.”

Thierry, who is joining the much less insane Republican Party (sarcasm very much intended), added that she’s “leaving the left because the left has abandoned Democrats who feel betrayed by a party that has lost its way, lost its commitment to hard working families.” Ok!

This is all the more hilarious because Thierry is about to be leaving the Texas House. She was primaried earlier this year after supporting various anti-trans bills, and is now the new director of political strategy for an anti-trans policy group.

So she’s a Republican now, but she doesn’t have an elected office to be Republican in. And honestly, we love that journey for her.

Anyway, House Speaker Dade Phelan is stoked to have a new office-less convert on board. He welcomed Thierry on X, writing: “We are thrilled to have you join us in championing the rights of parents, protecting the innocence of our children, and ensuring all voices are heard.”

So yeah. Much like comedians who were big on Saturday Night Live in the 90s, Thierry is now a right-wing rebrand.
